Change your registration details

When I installed Windows, I mistyped my name during setup. Since then I have also changed my company name. Whenever I install and register a new program the wrong names now come up. How can I correct this?

This problem is easily fixed. Simply run the Registry Editor. This is done by clicking Start, Run, Regedit and click on Edit, Find.

Type 'RegisteredOwner' (all one word) into the Find what box. Ensure only Values is checked in the Look at panel, and click ok. This should locate the data concerned in the Hkey_local_machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion folder.

The name and company name are actually stored in two separate values: RegisteredOwner and Registered Organization. Double-click the value you want to change, edit its contents and click ok to save the changes.

If you don't want to try editing the Registry then Magenta Systems (www.magsys.co.uk) has a free utility you can download which will also do it. It goes by the name of Update Windows Registration Details. If you do want to edit the Registry see tip Back up the Registry first.
